Grafton: The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1497 in South Grafton will hold a Flag Retirement Ceremony and fundraiser for the World War II monument on Sunday, September 18th starting at 12:00 Noon at the South Grafton Community House, 25 Main Street in South Grafton. The program will include a free will offering as a fundraiser for Grafton’s proposed World War II monument.
According to VFW Post Commander Roland Miranda, “The United States Flag Code states that when individual flags are in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, that flag should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. The ceremony also includes an empty chair designated as a place of honor for those lovers of Old Glory who have passed on or are too infirm to attend the ceremonies.”
The VFW has a distinctively painted red, white and blue “mailbox” stationed outside the doors of the South Grafton Community house where flags that are no longer in usable condition may be deposited at any time throughout the year. Those attending the flag retirement ceremony on September 18th may also bring their worn flags to the event. In addition, the VFW will make arrangements to pick up any United States flags from Grafton residents before the September 18th ceremony by calling the VFW post at 508-839-3825
Fundraising for Grafton’s World War II monument, to be dedicated near the Grafton Common on Veterans Day, 2011, continues under the direction of the Grafton Historical Society and its World War II monument committee. Tax exempt contributions may be made directly to the Grafton Historical Society.
